about

I had an idea for a CD cover that the title "Missing Link" would help, so I set about writing this song. It headed in all sorts of directions and I did think it needed editing, but I reckon a whole lot of unlinked ideas makes sense in such a song. Now, a "145" refers to a chord progression (a "three chord wonder"), which, in the key of A, would be A, D and E. In most songs, the chords are in various orders, like 1415 (ADAE), 1545 (AEDE), etc. But in this song, they just repeat 145145145 .... for the whole song and thus it needs three parts to bring it back in synch. Shrödinger's cat is a mythical cat created to illustrate the "uncertainty principle" of quantum physics: For a full explanation of this, see elsewhere. Oh, and by the way, I changed my mind on the CD title...

lyrics

Missing Link
(for Neeny and Gran)
These three chords plait together into song
To make Cupid's bow twang along
If brainclouds have made you take a dive
Play 145
And cherubs tend to thrive

With love for the missing link
The hole in the grail, the kitsch in synch
Ice cream's lovely and Vegemite rocks
But mixing them's bound to be pox
And yet it's the meeting of extremes
Exceeds your dreams
As foul as it first seems

With love...
The homework the dog once ate
The odd sock's mate
My smile might make you think that I'm insane
If gormless aloof is your game
I don't know you from a bar of soap
But I'd still hope
We'd help each other cope

With love...and Shrödinger's old cat
At this point you'd expect a middle eight
A bridge with a 6 could be great
Although if there's nothing to improve
Repeat the move
A rut is just a groove

With love...
And, of course, it goes without saying that
I don't long to be right at every turn
When wrong's such a bright way to learn
And if there's no answer there to miss
Accepting this
Is tantamount to bliss

With love...
Not to mention...
End with wit and profundity sublime
If not then at least make it rhyme
So flap little dove and rise above
The "push and shove"
And good old "hand in glove"

With love for the missing link
The hole in the grail, the kitsch in synch
The homework the dog once ate
The odd sock's mate and Shrödinger's old cat
And, of course, it goes without saying that...
Not to mention...
